I. What is Ultrasound Gel
Medical ultrasound gel is an essential medium used in ultrasound examinations. Its main function is to increase the gap between the ultrasound probe and the skin, reducing the loss of sound waves in the air, thereby producing clearer ultrasound imaging. Additionally, the gel also serves to protect the ultrasound probe. Special types of medical ultrasound gel, such as disinfection and sterilization gels, can prevent the occurrence of cross-infection.
II. Types of Medical Ultrasound Gel
Medical ultrasound gel can be mainly classified into three types: regular medical ultrasound gel, medical disinfection ultrasound gel, and medical sterile ultrasound gel.
1. Regular Medical Ultrasound Gel:
Regular medical ultrasound gel is primarily used for general ultrasound examinations on the surface of the skin. It should never be used for B-mode ultrasonography on damaged skin or mucous membranes. Its main components are carbomer and purified water, with a small amount of glycerin, gelatin, and other substances added to increase viscosity and enhance lubrication.
2. Medical Disinfection Ultrasound Gel:
In addition to the functions of regular medical ultrasound gel, medical disinfection ultrasound gel also has disinfection properties. Each person should use a separate tube to avoid cross-infection caused by multiple people using the same ultrasound probe.
3. Medical Sterile Ultrasound Gel:
Medical sterile ultrasound gel not only possesses the functions of regular medical ultrasound gel and medical disinfection ultrasound gel but also has inherent sterile characteristics. It is suitable for ultrasound examinations and diagnostic procedures in special scenarios, such as catheters, mucous membranes, damaged skin surfaces, and ICU clean environments. Its application scope is broader than the previous two types.
III. Precautions for Ultrasound Gel Usage
1. Pay attention to the expiration date of the ultrasound gel. Check whether the gel has expired before using it. Do not use if it has passed its expiration date.
2. If any allergic reactions occur, such as skin redness or itching, stop using the gel immediately. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. If the symptoms persist for an extended period, seek medical attention promptly.
